Blackpool Airport is located at Squires Gate on Lancashire’s Fylde Coast.
Although it no longer has regular scheduled airline services, Blackpool remains a busy and varied airfield. Its movements include general aviation, flying-school traffic, business jets, offshore helicopters, air-ambulance operations and occasional military visitors.
MORRISONS
The Morrisons supermarket on Amy Johnson Way sits close to the north-western side of Blackpool Airport and offers views towards the western end of Runway 10/28.
When Runway 10 is active, arriving aircraft approach from the coast before touching down nearby and when Runway 28 is operating, departing aircraft may pass this area as they accelerate towards the western end of the runway. The airport’s offshore helicopters, general aviation movements and occasional business or military visitors may also be visible from around this side of the airfield.
IMPORTANT: This is not an official airport viewing area. The supermarket car park is intended for customers and currently has a maximum stay period. Always check the signs on arrival, use the store if parking there and never leave your vehicle beyond the permitted time. Check current store and parking information
RUNWAY 10 APPROACH
When Runway 10 is active, arriving aircraft approach Blackpool Airport from the west, crossing the coastline, Clifton Drive North and the railway before touching down.
Public areas around Squires Gate and Clifton Drive North can provide excellent views as aircraft descend towards the runway. Depending on your position, you can capture side-on photographs or stand closer to the extended centreline for dramatic overhead shots.
This location can be particularly impressive when Blackpool receives larger business jets, military aircraft or special visitors.
Squires Gate railway station is close to the western end of the airport, while Starr Gate tram stop is approximately 400 metres away.
RUNWAY 28 APPROACH
When Runway 28 is active, arriving aircraft approach Blackpool Airport from the east, descending over the Common Edge Road area before touching down.
Public areas near the extended runway centreline can provide excellent views of approaching aircraft. Depending on where you stand, you can capture traditional side-on photographs or dramatic images from almost directly underneath the flight path.
This is particularly worthwhile when Blackpool receives business jets, military aircraft or other unusual visitors.
IMPORTANT: There is no official viewing area at the Runway 28 approach. Remain on public land, use designated parking and never stop on Common Edge Road or Vickers Way. Keep gates, business entrances and emergency access routes completely clear.
